Quote "I can't fly!"

Tyler Blu Gunderson is the main protagonist of Rio, Rio 2, Angry Birds Rio, other video games, and all of the books of the franchise (with the exception of Rio No.3: A Dog's Tale, where he is only a minor character). The human protagonist is Linda Gunderson.

In Rio, Tulio speculated that Blu was the last male of his kind, the Spix's Macaw. He is shy and socially awkward and is definitely the opposite of his mate Jewel. While he can log into a computer, open birdcages, and use a skateboard, and much more he had one major setback: He was unable to fly. When he met Jewel and fell in love with her, he was forced to put his fears aside and find out if he really had what it took to soar.

Blu is first seen sleeping as a young hatchling in an empty nest in a tree hollow. Awakened by the singing of his fellow birds in the rainforest near Rio de Janeiro, Blu dances along with them. During the song, he watches a female Golden Conure attempting to teach her chicks how to fly for the first time, and thinks of flying for himself — until smugglers start capturing the other birds. During the chaos, Blu, distracted slips out of the tree. During the fall, he makes a vain attempt to fly, but fails to do so and is also captured. Alongside other captured birds, Blu is caged, put on a plane, and almost brought to an exotic bird store to be sold. On the way, the back of the truck carrying him is forced open (due to the driver not paying attention to the traffic light), and the crate containing Blu falls onto the streets of Moose Lake, Minnesota. A young girl named Linda Gunderson finds the crate and promptly comforts the scared chick and promises to take care of him, later naming him Blu.

Over the next 15 years, Blu and Linda became the best of friends, with Linda throwing him birthday parties, taking him to spelling bees (one of which she wins at the age of 14), and even to her high school prom. As he gets older, he meets two Canada Geese named Alice & Chloe who mock him daily. One day, an ornithologist named Tulio Monteiro comes to the bookstore where Blu and Linda live, and tries to communicate with him, but fails. Afterward, he informs them that Blu is the last male of his species, the Spix's Macaw, and that he must mate with the only remaining female for his species to be saved. After Tulio tries to throw Blu halfway across the room in a failed attempt to let him fly, Blu attempts to fly by himself by looking at an airplane book and taking notes. However, during his attempt to fly, he changes his mind at the last second and gets entangled in Christmas lights. Blu and Linda are reluctant at first to catch the flight to Rio, where Tulio's aviary is located, but finally agrees to do so.

When they arrive in Rio, Blu meets Nico and Pedro, who give him some tips on how to attract a female. Once they arrive at Tulio's aviary, Blu is put off by the fact that his intended mate Jewel had badly scratched one of Tulio's assistants. However, when he sees her, he instantly falls in love. Blu tries to follow Pedro and Nico's advice, but Jewel, only interested in escaping, angrily rebuffs and attacks him because they "just met" and because he tried to kiss her. Watching through a video surveillance camera, Tulio activates a disco ball and plays Lionel Richie's Academy-Award-winning song "Say You, Say Me". Blu declares that he had nothing to do with that, but tells Jewel that it's not such a bad song, then begins to sing along with it. Jewel pounces on Blu and attacks him, but Linda and Tulio assume they are mating, causing them to promptly leave the aviary to give them some privacy. Jewel continues to try to escape after the fight occurred, while Blu tries to sleep through it and argue about humans. Later, Blu and Jewel are captured by a boy named Fernando, who brings them to a band of smugglers, assisted by the head smuggler Marcel's pet cockatoo, Nigel. Jewel and Blu tries to escape the smuggler's hideout by playing dead, but Jewel is pinned by Nigel just before she manages to escape via a ventilation vent. Blu and Jewel are chained together and locked up with many other captured birds. Later, Nigel approaches them and explains the reason for his evil nature, as well as the reason behind his hatred of "pretty birds", by singing a song. Afterward, Jewel makes an escape (assisted by Blu, who unlocks the cage's latch, which he mentions is "just a standard slip-slide bolt"). When Jewel tries to fly, Blu is forced to admit he cannot fly, much to Jewel's dismay, and they are forced to escape Nigel and the smugglers on foot, making their way into the jungles near Rio, much to Blu's displeasure. He does, however, get to sleep on a beam of the Vista Chinesa as he reveals his tricks on how to get up there without flying. On the other hand, Jewel tells him that the uniqueness of birds is their ability to fly (when he asks "who needs it") and that it is their freedom and independence from anyone. Blu responds that it seems a little lonely. Jewel suggests they get some sleep. Blu bids her good night, then says the same to Linda, knowing she is somewhere out there.

In the morning, Blu tries to compromise a way to break the chain but fails when he accidentally triggers his contraption himself, making him and Jewel get squashed against a rock. They are then set upon by a flock of baby toucans, whose father Rafael offers to take them to his friend Luiz to get the chain off. Eva is initially reluctant for Rafael to go, but after some persuasion, she tells him to hurry back. Blu is forced to explain he cannot fly, so Rafael also tries to get Blu to fly off a cliff, telling him he just needs to "feel the rhythm of [his] heart"; but Blu, still terrified, changes his mind at the last moment, making himself and Jewel land on a hang glider after tumbling off a cliff face. Enjoying the feeling of being in the air, Blu extends his wings while perched on the hang glider, causing himself and Jewel to be blown off the hang glider and onto the beach below. Rafael then leads them to a fruit stand, which takes them into the city. There, Blu once again meets Nico and Pedro, who informs the group that they had just missed the trolley that Luiz took to his workshop. While they wait, Nico and Pedro take the group to a bird's samba club. Once there, Blu, whose childhood memories are stirred by the music, starts to dance. With a little nudge from Rafael, Blu dances with Jewel, culminating in her singing beautifully, which captivates him. Just before the two kiss, the club is raided by a horde of mischievous marmosets, hired by Nigel to find them. After a brief stand-off, a battle ensues, during which the trolley arrives, and Blu and Jewel are given a lift there by a Roseate Spoonbill named Kipo.

On their way to Luiz's garage, Blu, with help from Nico, Pedro, and Rafael, uses romantic music to try to tell Jewel how he feels about her but is foiled when he inhales a stray flower petal, causing him to choke just as he was about to confess his love to her. When they finally arrive, they are surprised to learn that Luiz is a bulldog, and even more surprised that he intends to use a buzzsaw to cut the chain. In the ensuing chaos after he slips on his drool, Luiz catches the chain in his mouth, causing his drool to seep onto Blu and Jewel's legs, lubricating them sufficiently to slip out of the shackles. At first, Blu was overjoyed that he was free again, but his joy quickly fades when he sees Jewel flying through the air and rejoicing in her regained freedom, knowing that he and her will have to part ways. Jewel notices that something is wrong, but he coldly tries to brush her off. Jewel retaliates by chiding him for not being able to fly, which Blu responds by claiming that he never wanted to go to Rio in the first place and that he hates samba (shocking his friends, especially Nico, given his enjoyment in the birds' samba club), and walks away angrily. However, not long later, he is soon informed by Pedro and Nico that Nigel has captured Jewel, and decides to mount a rescue, using Luiz as a steed.

Blu and his company follow Nigel to the Carnival parade. Spotting Linda, Blu is briefly torn by his longingness to be reunited with Linda, but quickly reasserts control and instead decides to focus on saving Jewel. Once he finds her in the smugglers' float, he tries to set her free but gets caged himself by Nigel, alongside Rafael, Pedro, and Nico just as he busies himself with her cage's lock. After Marcel drives the smugglers' float away from the parade to the abandoned airport, they are loaded into the smugglers' plane, along with all the other captured birds. Fernando tries to free Blu and Jewel when loading the birds into the cargo bay of the plane but is noticed by Nigel and Marcel, stopping him.

As the smugglers' plane starts to head away from Rio de Janeiro, Blu rigs a bungee cord to a fire extinguisher to bent the top of his cage (referred to by Nico and Pedro as "popping the cage"), allowing him to escape. Then, he busies himself with the escape of others. As he flips a lever to open the plane's cargo bay, all the other birds escape, except for Blu, who is still afraid of flying. As Jewel tries to comfort him, Nigel attacks Blu, pins him down, and attempts to strangle him. Jewel tries to assist Blu in the battle, but Nigel knocks her into the plane's wall, making an empty cage fall on her wing, breaking it and making her no longer able to fly. This angers Blu and as Nigel mocks them, he tracks a nearby hissing sound and notices that a fire extinguisher is nearby. He manages to grab the bungee cord attached to the fire extinguisher, hooks it onto one of Nigel's talons and pulls off the safety pin, sending Nigel crashing out of the plane's cockpit and into one of the propellers which promptly ceases to function, subsequently causing the plane to lose altitude. As Jewel slides off the plane's cargo bay and tumbles into empty space, Blu forces himself to put his fears aside and jumps after her without hesitation. He then has another memory of falling out of the nest. As he catches her in mid-air, Jewel yells at him for being crazy, but Blu tells her that he won't let her go as they are still "chained-to each other birds" [1], Blu is kissed by Jewel. Blu is suddenly heartwarmed by Jewel's unexpected kiss and is suddenly aware of the beating of his heart, and with renewed determination, extends his wings, and successfully swoops out of the nosedive just in time to avoid crashing into the surface of the ocean, saving himself and Jewel. Flying down to Linda, Tulio, and Fernando, Blu convinces Jewel, who is still wary around humans, to let Tulio tend to her wing. After some time, when Jewel has made a full recovery, Blu joins her in the wild, sharing one last goodbye with Linda with a fist bump at the Blu Bird Sanctuary.

In the final scene, Blu, Jewel (now his significant other), and their three chicks Carla, Bia, and Tiago fly and sing in their new home.

Rio 2

A few years after their first encounter, Blu, Jewel, and their three children, Carla, Bia, and Tiago live the perfect domesticated life in the magical city that is Rio. Blu and Jewel dance at the New Year's Eve party, then they suddenly see Rafael and get worried since he was supposed to take care of the kids. They learn that he gave the children to Luiz to babysit them. But when they see Luiz, the kids are nowhere to be seen. He tells Blu and Jewel that he left them with Tiny, adding that she's an "excellent babysitter". Tiny then claims that she is a "terrible babysitter", and Blu and Jewel stop the kids before they light the fireworks she was attached to. Blu then frees Tiny, but gets strapped himself and lands on the arm of Christ the Redeemer. Blu remains as domesticated as ever and he is reveling in the conveniences of modern life. A perfect day for him is making pancakes for Jewel and their kids and plopping on the couch to watch a soccer game. He is definitely in his comfort zone, living large and like a human. However, Jewel is concerned that their children are becoming increasingly more like humans than birds, and that they may lose their original nature as birds. When Linda and Tulio discover a wild Spix's Macaw deep in the Amazon, Blu reluctantly agrees to go on a short trip suggested by Jewel to assist in their efforts to find them. Blu tells his buddies of his travel plans, but Nico, Pedro, and Luiz warn him of the myriad dangers that could lie ahead in the wild. But the ever-positive Rafael encourages Blu, reminding him “Happy wife, happy life!".

Blu thought the city of Rio was wild, but he didn't experience the true meaning of wild until he traveled to the Amazon rainforest. He is originally slightly reluctant to make the journey and shows discomfort, but admits that he’ll do it for the good of his family. After all, what could go wrong on a family vacation? Before they can begin their journey, Blu made some preparations for their 2000-mile journey to the Amazon. To do this, Blu enlists the help of a GPS device, much to Jewel's disapproval, to help them navigate across Brazil. He packed other items in his fanny pack as well, such as bug spray, water purifier, Band-Aids, the All-in-one Adventurer's Knife, and several other kinds of equipment. Blu and his friends and family unknowingly take many wrong turns in their trip, until Jewel points them in the right direction, allowing them to reach their destination.

When they arrive in Manaus, they hitch a ride on a riverboat and take a much-needed break from flying. During the ride down the Amazon, Jewel notices Blu is still indecisive about their adventure. She decides to cheer him up by thanking him for coming along. Upon their arrival at Blu's intended destination, Blu and Jewel stumble upon the other Spix's Macaws at the Amazon sanctuary, where they discover, to everyone’s and especially Jewel’s shock, that the leader of the Spix's Macaw tribe is Jewel’s long-lost dad, Eduardo. Initially grateful that Blu has brought Jewel back into Eduardo’s life, the stern patriarch quickly becomes a disapproving father-in-law. Eduardo -as Blu soon realizes- is very strict with him, and is unhappy that he has so many ties to humans and their tools, like his ever-present fanny pack and GPS device.

As the family settles into this exciting new world, Blu finds his learning curve to be a steep one. He is unable to handle even the most simple and important tasks, like building a nest and foraging for food. Blu not only feels out of place in the jungle but also feels out of place with the entire flock of birds even if they are from the same species, probably because they don't share any of his lifestyle choices. If meeting a critical father-in-law wasn't enough, Blu must also be content to Jewel’s childhood friend Roberto. Blu feels not only threatened by Roberto but is mildly jealous because of Roberto's ability to charm any female Spix's Macaw. To Blu, the Amazon rainforest feels like the most exotic or foreign place it could for a bird that originated from Minnesota or Rio.

Meanwhile, unknown to Blu, Jewel and their friends, their old enemy Nigel (who actually survived the plane's crash and shredding by its propellers) is plotting revenge on them with his new minions, Gabi the tree frog, and Charlie the anteater. After an arduous "training session" with Eduardo, Blu expresses his worries to Rafael, Pedro, and Nico, most notably about Jewel's recently wild behavior by snapping at a stray fly the previous evening, and they tell him to calm down. As they are talking, Nigel, disguised in torn leaves, walks past them. Owing to his disguise, Blu does not recognize his old nemesis, and Nigel, right now a little too into his new act, passes Blu without acknowledging him.

After dreaming an idea in the midddle of his sleep, Blu tries to make Jewel happy, fearing that she may leave him, so he decides to forage around the jungle for a Brazilian nut (her favorite) for her. As he was foraging for the nut, he unknowingly steps into the Red Macaw Tribe's territory. Dissatisfied, Felipe, the head of the tribe, declares "war" to decide who keeps the entire Brazil nut grove. Both tribes head to the Pit of Doom for a decisive soccer match. After some time, Blu ends up being a player in the game and tries to prove himself to the tribe. Although his soccer skills were surprisingly good for a first-timer, he ends up scoring for the wrong team, much to everyone's disappointment. Blu then tells Jewel that he probably doesn't belong in the Amazon and would like to return to Rio, but Jewel tries to reason with him that the Amazon may be their actual home, not Rio. They both then have an argument, and Jewel then tells him that he has to figure what he wants to do and "start thinking about [them] instead of himself". He then leaves with his fanny pack and GPS, heading towards Linda and Tulio's campsite.

Blu flies to Linda and Tulio's camp in the jungle, intending to say goodbye because he has decided to stay with his family in the Amazon. As he readies himself to leave, he trips over a destroyed radio transmitter, stirring up confusion and suspicions. However, he is followed by Roberto, who thinks he is a traitor to his species. During their argument, they are both surprised to see a logging harvester destroying the jungle. Blu yells at Roberto to move out of the logger's way, but Roberto is frozen in fear of humans. Blu then shoves Roberto out of its way at the last second, saving them. After seeing Roberto panicking, Blu successfully reasserts his control by slapping him across his face, telling him to snap out of it and to warn the tribe while he finds Linda and Tulio. Blu then finds Linda and Tulio and unties them from the tree they were captured at, before flying to the loggers' base of operations, surveying their progress of destruction in the Amazon Rainforest in shock and dismay before flying back to the tribe.

Blu later returns to the tribe to hear that Jewel won't leave without him, and briefly touch beaks as they reunite. Blu then convinces the entire tribe that his knowledge of humans is, for once, useful to them, and convince the tribe to cancel their evacuation ordered by Eduardo, choosing instead to fight back. Blu, Jewel, Eduardo, and all the other blue macaws then attack the loggers (Blu taking the lead), quickly gaining the upper hand. Halfway through the battle, the Scarlet Macaw tribe alongside other animals come to help them fight the loggers. As they are finishing the battle, a loud "BOOM" ricocheted through the air, accompanied by an ominous plume of smoke. Blu tracks the sound and smoke to Big Boss, the head logger who is setting some dynamite to detonate and fell the trees nearby. Determined to save the tribe and the rainforest, Blu cuts the ropes binding the dynamite to the trees and grabs the dynamite, flying skywards, hoping to set them off at a safe distance. However, as he does so, Nigel, still in disguise, clings on the chain of dynamite, pursuing and attacks him, revealing his true identity to Blu a few seconds before the dynamite explodes in mid-air, shocking Jewel, who was watching their progress from a distance, with fear that he may have died in the explosion. However, both Blu and Nigel survive the explosion and end up entangled in vines, upside down and unconscious from the explosion, but still alive. When they both regain consciousness shortly afterward, Nigel attacks Blu, failing to do any real damage and promptly have a feather fight. Gabi tries to shoot Blu with a "poisoned" dart but fails to aim correctly and accidentally hits Nigel. The rest of the tribe finds them, allowing Blu to reunite with his family and promptly listens to Nigel's death speech before seemingly dying. Gabi, saddened by Nigel's "death", consume a drop of her own "poison" and also seemingly dies. However, it is revealed by Bia that Gabi isn't poisonous, pointing out that she is actually just a normal tree frog, distinguished by her pink spots. Upon hearing this, Nigel and Gabi stare at her momentarily. Nigel, still alive, charges toward Blu and his family in a vain attempt for vengeance. Blu shields Bia and Tiago with his wings instinctively, but Gabi grabs Nigel's feet, still overjoyed that they are still alive, and drag him away. Blu then looks at Jewel before shrugging and flies away with his family.

In the end, Blu, Jewel, and their family and friends all celebrate together at Pedro, Nico, and Carla's "Amazon Untamed" performance, and Blu decides he might feel at home in the Amazon after all. Jewel suggests a compromise, allowing Blu and his family to spend summers in Rio.

Rio: Snakes Alive!

In between the first and second films, Blu visits Linda at the Blu Bird Sanctuary, where she has made him waffles. While there, he hears that the Sanctuary is in danger of being sold. He flies back to his family and tells them. Jewel suggests they could live in the wild, which worries Blu. Instead, he suggests they raise the money to save the Sanctuary themselves. After explaining to his family what money is (to the best of his knowledge), Blu has the idea to go and see Luiz, reasoning that since the bulldog has lived in the city all his life, he would know how to get money.

Luiz turns out to have next to no ideas about how to get money. After hearing a bald man admit he would "pay a million dollars" for something that could grow his hair back, Blu suggests they find something that does just that. Luiz then tells them the story of a lost civilization that supposedly had an elixir that could regrow hair, hidden inside the Pedra Da Gavea, a cliff face that resembles a human head. Blu and Jewel decide to go and investigate the monument, leaving the kids with Rafael, Nico, and Pedro.

As they near the mountain, Blu is scared by a baby bat named Basil, who is himself scared by Blu, causing him to drop his stick, "Jeffrey". Basil's family arrive, and, believing Jeffrey to be one of their clan, go after Blu and Jewel. Blu and Jewel enter the Pedra Da Gavea through a small hole, and they find a small amount of elixir left. They are then attacked by the bats (Who had been directed there by Nigel), which inadvertently causes a cave-in, trapping Blu and Jewel.

Bia, Carla, and Tiago then arrive, having slipped away from their babysitters, calming the bats by explaining who "Jeffrey" is, and that they returned him. Blu is at first glad to hear from them, then yells at them for following. Bia deciphers some hieroglyphics, finding what seems to be a way out. However, they accidentally release Ssssalbatore, who attacks them. Blu tries to distract Ssssalbatore but is flung outside. Ssssalbatore follows, smashing through the rock. When the giant anaconda corners the blue macaw family, Blu tells them he loves them. The bats then attack Ssssalbatore, and Blu joins in, covering the snake's eyes. Ssssalbatore slithers down to Rio, with Blu (his talon stuck in one of his scales) hanging on for dear life. Jewel manages to get Blu free just before Ssssalbatore drops into the ocean.

The next day, Blu and his family lead Linda and Tulio to the cave, where the bat clan has taken roost. At first, disappointed that the elixir is gone, Blu and his family are ecstatic when Tulio discovers that the bats are an undiscovered species and that he and Linda can get grants to study them, saving the sanctuary. Blu thanks his children for saving him and Jewel, adding that he doesn't know whether to be mad at their babysitters for letting them get away, or thank them.

Blu has Light and Dark blue feathers and brown eyes. He has white facial markings around his eyes with a ring of darker feathers around them. He is taller, larger, and not quite as slender as his mate. Unlike Jewel, he sports a feather ruffle on the back and sides of his neck, with some extra feathers in the front. Blu also has three short feathers on the back of his head. His beak and talons are black, his toes are gray, and he has a long tail.

Personality and Traits

Shy, socially awkward and smart, he usually says things that are the last thing on his mind and can sometimes even make you laugh. He is unable to express himself and his feelings very well sometimes. But if the girl of his dreams is in trouble, he is willing to risk it all to save her, even if it could cost his life, an example of which includes him jumping out of the plane for Jewel in Rio, knowing very well that he would probably die. He is one-of-a-kind and is proud of it. Despite being awkward, unable to express himself and even a bit clumsy with words, Blu is very softhearted, sweet, handsomely cute, super smart, and because of his colorful courage and bravery, he has a tendency to never give up. Even when Nigel tries to strangle Blu during their escape from the smugglers' plane, he pushes away his own fears and problems to focus on Jewel's broken wing. Blu is always organized and well prepared for trips and prefers the easiest option, a Fanny Pack. He is hesitant to venture into the wild but is willing to do so for the sake of his family.

In Rio 2, it can be seen that fatherhood has had a profound effect on Blu's personality. He is a kind, loving father who cares deeply for his children, as shown by his constant worry for the sake of their well-being (such as taking away the match Tiago lit had in the opening scenes). Nevertheless, he loves to have fun with his children, pretending to play soccer when Tiago throws blueberries at him in Linda and Tulio's house. He does his hardest to give his family the best, lovingly cooking pancakes for them and putting his own comfort aside to travel to the Amazon. He is also very sweet to Jewel, always protecting her and promising to do whatever it takes to help her. Although mischief can drive him crazy (for example the Kid Macaws and Tiago woke him up with a spider, which he is very afraid of.)

Primary Relationships

Blu and Jewel

Blu lived in Minnesota for fifteen years under the care of Linda. After Tulio, an ornithologist tells Linda that he is the last male of his kind, he travels to Rio and meets Jewel. Shy and socially awkward, his impression and approach to Jewel was misunderstood. But later on, she warms up to him during their adventure together. The two had three baby chicks, Bia, Carla, and Tiago, who appear at the end of Rio, and once again in Rio 2.

Additional Info

Blu is always concerned about Jewel. Although she at first often acted hostile towards him, he would act in a friendly manner. Jewel did not like him much until their dance duet in the birds' Samba Club. In Rio, Blu nervously tried to admit his feelings toward her, but awkwardly failed when he accidentally inhaled a stray cherry blossom, causing him to choke. When the chain was removed, he was upset at the fact they would have to part ways. This caused an argument between him and Jewel, after which he angrily walked away. After hearing Jewel had been captured, however, he goes to rescue her, passing up the chance to be reunited with Linda to do so. When Jewel, with an injured wing, falls out of the plane, Blu puts his fears aside and jumps after her while still not knowing how to fly. As a result of his actions, he finally wins her heart through his selfless sacrifice.

In Rio 2, Blu is a loving and devoted husband to Jewel. In spite of his own misgivings, he agrees to take the family to the Amazon, just to make her happy. He even admits he would do anything for her on board the Ceu Azul boat in the Amazon. Once they reach the Amazon, Blu starts to feel threatened by Jewel's childhood friend, Roberto, fearing that he may steal her away. On his friends' advice, he decides to "bird up" and get Jewel a Brazil nut as a surprise (which results in the soccer match between the blue and red macaws). When Blu airs his grievances to Jewel about staying in the Amazon, they briefly argue, with Blu saying that the jungle isn't home. Blu leaves for Linda's position, but only to say goodbye, having decided that Jewel and the kids are more important. After encountering the loggers, he returns to Jewel, the two affectionally touching beaks, glad to see each other again. After the loggers are defeated, Blu assures Jewel that he is fully prepared to spend his life in the jungle. After a spider scares him, Jewel suggests they spend summers in Rio. Blu responds by saying "You're my one and only, Jewel."

Blu and Linda

Linda is Blu's best friend. Back in Minnesota, they would do everything together, hardly ever parting. When Blu joins Jewel in the jungle, he and Linda share one of their special "fist bumps" as a farewell to each other.

In Rio 2, they are shown to still be quite close; Linda waves to Blu when she is interviewed on TV, and gave him a fanny pack at some point. An image shown on the news depicts Blu and Jewel at Linda and Tulio's wedding, Blu perched on Linda's arm. When they reach the Amazon, Blu suggests that they find Linda and Tulio, but is shot down by Jewel. After deciding to stay in the jungle, Blu goes to Linda and Tulio's camp to say goodbye. He later frees Linda and Tulio from being tied to a tree by the loggers (after Linda alerted him with a bird call). After the loggers are repelled, he and Linda share a fist bump. When Linda and Tulio are interviewed by a news reporter about making the Amazon a wildlife reserve, Blu is perched on Linda's arm, and squawks in agreement when Linda declares they will protect the jungle and its inhabitants together.

Secondary Relationships

While still frightened of the toucan's twenty-one kids and mate, Blu often takes Rafael's advice, respecting his wisdom and intelligence. It is Rafael's words of encouragement that motivated Blu to go on the journey to the Amazon. Blu turns to Rafael (and Nico and Pedro) for advice, voicing his personal thoughts about the Amazon, Eduardo, and Roberto. Rafael comforts Blu and is there for him, reminding him that 'a happy wife is a happy life!'. It's shown in both Rio 2 and the Rio: Snakes Alive! novel that Blu and Jewel trust Rafael enough to let him babysit Carla, Bia, and Tiago.

Nico and Pedro

Nico and Pedro are the first friends Blu makes in Rio, and he treats them as such, even though their advice on courting Jewel failed miserably. Blu turns to the pair (along with Rafael) for advice on the Amazon, and considers them as close friends. Despite their recklessness, Blu still trusts Nico and Pedro enough to let them babysit his kids, shown in the Rio: Snakes Alive! novel.

When they first meet, Blu is disturbed by Tulio's attempts to "communicate" with him and doesn't take kindly to the good doctor throwing him across the room in an attempt to make him fly. Blu also doesn't care for Tulio's attempts to make him look "irresistible," quickly smoothing out his fluffed-up head feathers. Nevertheless, Blu admires Tulio for his work to protect the birds of Brazil, trusting him to heal Jewel's wing.

Nigel is Blu's arch-nemesis. When they first met, Nigel was posing as a "sick bird," and responded to Blu's "Get well soon" with an evil glare, which made Blu cringe. Since Nigel's true evil nature was revealed, Blu developed a rivalry with the cockatoo and took an immense disliking to him. Blu later classifies Nigel's "Pretty Bird" song as "scary, but not cool." When Nigel injures Jewel, Blu once again denounces him as "not cool," before blasting him out of the plane, and into its engine. They are both still enemies, and Nigel is also an enemy of Jewel, Blu's mate. Blu still has nightmares about Nigel.

In Rio 2, Nigel seeks revenge on Blu for defeating and humiliating him in the first film. Twice, Blu fails to recognize him in his leaf disguise, but when the disguise falls away, he instantly realizes who he is.

Blu is initially terrified of Luiz, thinking he is a rabid dog. Once this is revealed to be a joke, Blu generally treats him with friendliness, though he is repulsed by the bulldog's drool. In Rio 2, Blu and Jewel are shown to still not entirely trust Luiz, as Blu voiced his concerns when Rafael tells him and Jewel that he left Luiz babysitting the kids.

Bia, Carla, and Tiago

Blu has three children together with Jewel: Bia, Carla, and Tiago. He has a very close relationship with them and is a very responsible and loving father. He loves them so much that he would have been prepared to leave the comforts of Rio forever so that they and Jewel would be happy. He seems to have the closest relationship with Bia, possibly because she is most similar to him, personality-wise, despite her being much less timid than him.

Eduardo and Blu do not get off to a good start when they meet each other. As Eduardo's son-in-law, Blu didn't make the best first impression to his father-in-law. It looks as if Eduardo is not really happy with the relationship between Blu and his daughter Jewel. Things get worse when Eduardo learns that Blu is a "pet." In private, Blu denounces Eduardo to his friends as a "total nut job" and was annoyed every time he would compare him with Roberto, though he still strives to earn his approval. Eventually, Blu earns Eduardo's respect after he leads the tribe in repelling the loggers.

Blu's aunt-in-law, Mimi is the only member of Jewel's family who accepts Blu as her niece's mate. She welcomes Blu and Jewel into the Spix's macaw tribe with open wings and smooths over the conflict between Blu and Eduardo. Mimi reminds her younger brother that he must accept and honor Jewel's choice of mate, despite what he may think of his son-in-law.

When Blu meets Jewel's childhood friend, he is uncomfortable at the past relationship between his mate and Roberto. It seems as though Roberto can do almost anything Blu can't, and he has a more beautiful singing voice. Roberto has more confidence and can easily charm females, making Blu feel incredibly inadequate. Blu is afraid that Jewel will fall for Roberto, and that got worse every time Eduardo compared the two. When Roberto becomes paralyzed with fear over the loggers, Blu slaps him and takes charge of the situation.

When Blu first met Felipe, Blu was perturbed when Felipe called him Eduardo's "sidekick" and "nurse." Once Felipe and his friends left, Blu commented that they seemed nice. When he accidentally trespasses into the red macaws' territory, he is intimidated by Felipe and his friends, and tries to talk his way out, but fails, making things worse by accidentally hitting Felipe with a tree branch. He can't help but snort when Felipe brings up the Pit of Doom. When Blu gets into the soccer game, he accidentally passes the ball to Felipe, who mocks him for it. During the battle against the loggers, Blu joins Felipe in kicking Brazil nuts at them.

Not much interaction is shown between Blu and Tiny (known as the Green Bird in the first film). However, in the second film, Luiz gave the kids to Tiny to babysit, Blu does not trust Tiny to Babysit the kids, even though the two became friends over the years.

Abilities and Skills

  • Mimicking
    • Sounds
      • He was seen mimicking a clock alarm, a ringtone, and a car alarm when waking Linda up. Shortly after, he mimicked the sound of a police car's siren while riding on his toy car.
      • Later, he was seen mimicking a dog's bark while escaping from The Smugglers Hideout, (along with Jewel being chased by Nigel, Armando, and Tipa).
  • Typing (shown during the intro credits of Rio)
  • Reading (shown during the intro credits of Rio)
    • Blu is shown reading a book about flight fundamentals after his and Linda's encounter with Tulio.
  • Writing and Math
    • Blu has been shown to calculate flight physics, even though he fails by hesitating at the last second.
    • He also drew a design of his plan to break the chain for Jewel, but he didn't plan ahead and his beak ended up tangled with the vine rope, pulling him and Jewel along the pulley.
  • Dancing
    • When Nico and Pedro sang "Hot Wings (I Wanna Party)," Blu got carried away, dancing to the music, in the first movie.
    • This is also the case during New Year's Eve when he dancing with Jewel to "What Is Love" in Rio 2.
    • Later, he can quickly mimic the male dancers' moves during the Tribe's celebration of Jewel's return after observing them briefly in Rio 2.
  • Singing
    • He sings along to Lionel Richie's Academy-award-winning "Say You, Say Me" along with it, a verse in "Real in Rio," and also a verse of "What Is Love" with Jewel during the New Year's Eve party.
  • Skateboarding
    • During Carnival, he jumps on a skateboard, enabling him to maneuver through the parade swiftly.
    • He is capable of performing skateboard tricks that professionals do.
    • No other bird in Rio can use a skateboard (or even know what a skateboard is).
    • His skateboarding skills could be gained from using his toy car. back in Blue Macaw Books in Moose Lake, Minnesota.
    • In real life, captive-bred Parrots can use a mini skateboard as a trick from training the bird.
  • Human Intelligence
    • He worked with Linda in the bookstore. He is smarter than other birds, as shown by him reading many books over the years.
    • He can also open birdcages easily. At the smugglers' hideout, when Jewel was trying to get out the cage, he just opened it without trouble and said that it's just a standard flip slide bolt lock. When he was locked with a pad lock on smugglers plane he found an idea to open the top with a fire extinguisher.
  • Flying Straight with Jewel (only in Angry Birds Rio)
    • Without Jewel, he takes advantage of his inability, and flaps his wings around causing moderate damage to his foes.
  • Flying
    • He learns to fly near the end of the first movie.
    • In the second film near the end, he also learns to fly backwards.
  • Brushing (shown during the intro credits of Rio and just outside Roberto's Nest in Rio 2)
    • He was putting toothpaste on a toothbrush and used it to brush his beak.
  • Toasting
    • Blu knows how to toast bread by using a toaster, seen during the intro credits of Rio.
  • Acrobatics
    • He was showing mostly his agility and balance. Like doing some stunts to get around in Linda's house and climbing up to the tree fort.
    • He is also shown dragging Jewel up the Vista Chinesa.
  • Talons
    • He uses his talons to hold and grab things, such as holding a cup of water to wash down the toothpaste, drinking hot chocolate (this is a factual error, as like it is for dogs, chocolate is toxic to macaws and other birds), and tying a bungee cord to Nigel's leg to save Jewel.
  • Fist Bump (shown during the intro and end credits of Rio and after driving the loggers away in Rio 2)
    • It's a handshake that he and Linda do, though he uses his foot; birds don't have hands, and can only use their feet for this kind of thing.
  • Playing Dead
    • He can act dead, albeit with some overly-exaggerated death throes.
  • Fire Extinguisher Mechanism
    • Blu was seen using a fire extinguisher to free himself from Nigel's grasp by pulling out the safety pin from the fire extinguisher, which sends Nigel spiraling out of the plane's cockpit and into one of the plane's propellers.
  • Riding Toy Car
  • Cooking
  • Strength
    • Blu can carry Jewel or two of his children without any difficulty.
    • He can also carry Nigel and several sticks of dynamite in the air (with some difficulty).
  • Soccer
    • In Rio 2, he is shown to be a great soccer player, both at breakfast by using a blueberry as a ball to aim at a pancake, and during the "war" game at the Pit of Doom, using a Brazil Nut.
      • This may be due to his American upbringing.
  • GPS Operations
    • In Rio 2, Blu uses a GPS during the family's journey to the Amazon.
  • Beak Strength
    • In Rio 2, Eduardo teaches Blu how to free himself from a rope or vine trap using his beak. Blu finds this useful, as he helps untie Linda and Tulio from the tree when the loggers tie them to a tree. Also, after Nigel was struck by Gabi's poison dart, Blu frees himself and Nigel by biting through the vines they were hanging from.
  • Speed
    • Blu is shown to have considerable flying speed in Rio 2, during the "war" game in the Pit of Doom by flying faster than the other Scarlet Macaws.
    • However Eduardo is way faster than him when he is flying.

  • In many promotional videos for the movie, and on soundtrack, DVD and Blu-ray covers, Blu is shown wearing several different outfits ranging from hats to a scarf but he never wears these in the film. These were designed to be promotional images.
  • It is likely that Blu is loosely based off of Presley, a real-life Spix's Macaw that lived with a Near-Denver Colorado family until 2002 when the Brazilian government ordered the family to transfer the bird to a zoo in Brazil for conservation purposes.
    • This might explain why they chose Blu to live in Minnesota (Persley lived in Colorado)
    • Tragically, Presley died on June 25, 2014, leaving behind no wild offspring to help save the Spix's Macaw species, meaning that any wild genetic inheritance for the Spix's Macaw is now impossible.
    • Coincidentally, Rio 2 was released in the same year as Presley's death.
    • However, according to some resources, he lived a long life, about 40 years.
  • He claims that once in a while he picks his beak (which is similar to nose-picking) and that once in a while he pees in the birdbath, but birds, in reality, are unable to pick their beaks and urinate.
  • Tyler Blu Gunderson is the real name of a person from Australia.
  • His name has been at times been mistakenly thought to be the name of the film itself especially by those unfamiliar with the film, a common mistake in which someone assumes the title of the work is the name of the main character.
  • In the second scene of the first film, Blu jumps on the keyboard of Linda's computer. The password is known to be "92v]ia."
  • The maximum weight of objects that birds can carry or lift in their talons while being able to fly are more or less equal to their weight.
    • This means that, in real life, it is possible that Blu can carry Jewel back to Linda and Tulio but impossible to lift a string of dynamite with Nigel on it.
  • Blu can sometimes be bad-mannered, like when he was brushing his teeth with Linda: he drank a cup of water to wash down the toothpaste, but instead of spitting it out, he swallowed it and belched, which Linda found disgusting.
    • Tiago seems to have inherited this particular trait. But it still drives Blu crazy, for example, he used a spider to wake him up.
  • When Blu and Jewel arrive at Luiz's Garage, the saw сut off the feather on Blu's head, but reappears in the next scene.
  • He was seen drinking a cup of hot chocolate and eating chocolate chip cookies off a plate (even dunking one in his chocolate).
    • This is a factual error, as it is for dogs (and other animals), chocolate is toxic to all species of birds.
    • The cookies are also a factual error, toxic to animals, and too many for most humans to eat without getting sick.
    • In Rio 2, he is seen taking a sip of spoiled coffee. However coffee is also toxic to all animals because of caffeine and other chemicals.
  • Even though Blu was born in Rio de Janeiro, he did not show any willingness to go there, maybe because he prefers living in Moose Lake, forgot he lived there or had no memory of being born in Rio.
    • It is unknown which is the real reason. It could even be a combination of the three.
  • His name refers to his blue feathers, though in his name, the letter "e" is dropped. Coincidentally the spelling of his name is also the word for Blue in Italian.
    • Ironically however despite his name he does not have blue eyes having brown eyes instead, with his mate, Jewel having blue eyes instead.
  • He and Linda lived together for fifteen years. [3]
    • In Rio 2, they are shown to still be close. Waving at Blu on the camera on TV. Blu also frees Linda and Tulio when they were tied to a tree.
  • Blu has an image of his face on the Blu Bird Sanctuary (which was also named in his honor).
  • When Blu arrives in Rio, Nico tells him he does not look like a tourist. This might be a play on the fact that Spix's Macaws are endemic to Brazil. It could also be a reference to the fact Blu was (likely unbeknownst to him) born there. After Nico notices, Pedro says "You got pigeon doo-doo on your nose," which Blu replies that it's just SPF 3000.
    • Nico and Pedro then both give advice on how to attract a female.
  • When Blu is put in Jewel's aviary with an afro-like hairstyle to try and impress her, it is actually an accurate fact as macaws commonly puff up their head feathers so their partners cannot resist preening them.
  • The fate of Blu's parents remains unknown.
    • However, when he was a chick they could have been searching for food, celebrating Carnival with the other birds, or they could have been captured.
    • It's unknown, but Blu could've even had siblings, but they would either leave the nest or stay and fly with their parents.
    • It is assumed that their fate will be revealed in Rio 3.
  • Blu was originally to be voiced by Neil Patrick Harris. However, he had other commitments outside production and was replaced by Jesse Eisenberg. He was asked during the filming of The Social Network if he would do his voice recording on the weekends; he agreed after reading the script, saying, "It was the perfect antidote to get out of the mindset of my character in Social Network who was so severe, and in some ways so joyless."
  • Blu claims to know about the food chain by watching Animal Planet.
  • In Rio, Blu uses his talons to shake "hands", as seen when he first meets Jewel in Tulio's aviary. However, in Rio 2, he uses his wing to shake "hands".
    • In real life, Parrots can be taught to shake hands by their owner with their talons, but not with their wings.
  • In Rio 2, Blu meets Jewel's childhood friend, Roberto, and becomes jealous, fearing Jewel may wish to rekindle their relationship, which got worse every time Eduardo compares the two.
    • However, Roberto treats Blu fairly well. Such as asking to borrow Jewel instead of just taking her away, telling him at night "alright buddy sleep well", and telling him if anything happens to him he will take care of his family.
    • But later he finds Blu as a traitor and a pet, which he dislikes.
    • However, Blu might also have been jealous because of Roberto's appearance, flirting with other females, his singing, and/or maybe even his suave personality.
    • He might even be overreacting if any other male his age speaks to Jewel and fear that he will lose Jewel as well, stated in the beginning of the movie that Jewel said "Your my one and only Blu." and Blu says "That's a good thing since I'm the only other one."
    • In the original story Roberto was going to be Jewel's former boyfriend, however the cast and crew might have thought of it too inappropriate and changed him to a childhood friend. It could have also been kept for the G rating.
  • In Rio 2, Blu also meets Jewel's father, Eduardo, who is the leader of the remaining Spix's Macaw clan who have been hiding in the Amazon Rain forest and Eduardo's sister, Mimi.
  • Currently, Blu can only open a Brazil nut with a Swiss army knife.
  • In Rio 2, Blu carries around a fanny pack that keeps his belongings, such as a map.
  • Blu's name in the Russian version of the series is "Голубчик" (Golubchik).
  • In Rio 2, Blu uses a GPS that utilizes voice recognition. It is never explained how this works, as no human in the movie can understand Blu when he talks (or squawks, which is how macaws speak).
  • Blu's age is approximately 15 years old at the end of Rio [4], which is about three-quarters of a Spix's Macaw's minimum lifespan (Spix's Macaws live for 20 to 40 years [5]).
    • At the start of Rio 2, Blu is approximately 19 years old, given the 4-year span between Rio and Rio 2's events. Although Rio was released in 2011, it takes place one year back.
  • Blu doesn't like Brazil nuts, according to Jewel in Rio 2.
  • In one of the original storyboards for the breakfast scene at the beginning of Rio 2, Blu was far more accepting of a trip to the Amazon, wholeheartedly agreeing after being persuaded by Jewel.
  • In Rio: Match 3 Party, Blu will sometimes tell the player to "roll up their sleeves" when poked. He then asks if that is something humans do. Given how he was raised by Linda, it is logical to conclude that Blu has seen her do just that, making his question rather silly.
  • When Linda applies sunblock on Blu's beak in Rio, Blu resembles a juvenile Spix's Macaw, as their culmen (top-center of their beaks) have a white stripe until they are 1 to 2 years old.
    • However, birds and parrots cannot get sunburn-like humans, which is a factual error in the movie although it’s possible Linda was unaware of this due to being protective of him.
  • Blu used to eat fruity cereal. But birds should only eat low sugar cereals in captivity in moderation such as Cheerios (no flavors added), Life, Chex, Cream of wheat, or plain oatmeal. He also cooked pancakes in Rio 2. Pancakes are fine on rare occasions, and should be whole wheat,, but they should not have syrup or whipped cream (blueberries are fine).

  • "Ah, this is the life."
  • "The perfect marshmallow-to-cocoa ratio."
  • "One, two, three, four, five... Six!"
  • "Mmm."
  • "Very funny, real mature."
  • "Throw all the snowballs you want!"
  • "I'm protected by this magical forcefield, called "glass"!"
  • "It's what keeps us so toasty and warm in here, while you're out there freezing your-"
  • "Classy."
  • "Linda... a little help here. Linda!"
  • "I did not get that at all."
  • "What kind of doctor are you?"
  • "Natural instincts! Pfft!"
  • "There's nothing natural about being thrown halfway across a room."
  • "Well, I'll show him."
  • "I can do this!"
  • "I just have to work out the physics."
  • "I have quadrated my vector angles."
  • "I have adjusted for wind shear."
  • "Positive reinforcement... good."
  • "Okay, let's see... flaps open, perfect."
  • "Landing gear, check."
  • "Tail flaps, operational, and, actually... not bad!"
  • "This is it... let's fly."
  • "Just keep it simple."
  • "Thrust, lift, drag, weight."
  • "Thrust, lift, drag... wait, wait, wait, wait!"
  • "Oh, right yeah."
  • "I... am not... from here."
  • "Really, I... I don't?"
  • "Oh no, this is just SPF 3000."
  • "Actually, I'm just here to meet, uh... a girl."
  • "Right."
  • "What?"
  • "No, no. Wait!"
  • "No, no, no, that's okay."
  • "No no, guys, really, I'm fine. The cage is great, love the cage." *hugs the cage bars*
  • "Yes, yes, bem..."
  • "A-And to you, as well."
  • "Ew!"
  • "Get well soon."
  • "Huh?!"
  • "She did that?! Charming."
  • "Okay, I wanna go home now!"
  • "Help! Help! Let me out of here!"
  • "Linda!!!"
  • "Hello?"
  • "Uh, I come in peace!"
  • "Whoa... she's beautiful."
  • "What were they talking about?"
  • "She's-she's like an angel."
  • "An angel who's getting really... close... Agh!"
  • "You're standing on my throat."
  • "Thanks. I need my throat for talking. So, thank you."
  • "Hi, my name is Blu."
  • "Like the cheese... With the mold on it... You know, that smells really bad."
  • "That's stupid, stupid, stupid..."
  • "Wait, wait, wait! Ow!"
  • "For what? Oh, wow. Okay."
  • "Confidence...! Crazy love hawk."
  • "Wait, wait, wait."
  • "What? What you wanted me to."
  • "But, just for argument's sake, uh, what are you doing?"
  • "Yeah, escape, that's where I was going with that thing I just did."
  • "No! It's not what you think."
  • "I mean, know how my feathers look, but I'm not that kind of bird."
  • "Okay, I had nothing to do with that."
  • "But, you have to admit it's actually a pretty good song."
  • "Naturally... Yeah, sing it, Lionel."
  • "Help me!"
  • "Excuse me...! Please, I am trying to sleep."
  • "Escape? Why? This cage is awesome!"
  • "Pet? Did you just call me a pet?"
  • "For the record, I am not a pet. I am a companion."
  • "And you know what? Do whatever you want, because tomorrow morning, Linda will come for me, and this whole nightmare will be over!"
  • "Yeah, well, that human has given me love and affection for the past 15 years, whereas my own kind tried to strangle me after 15 seconds!"
  • "Of course you can trust humans!"
  • "Jewel? Jewel...?"
  • "Oh, hi there!"
  • "Okay, there's no place like home, there's no place like home..."
  • "Oh, how I wish I was back in my cage with my mirror, and my swing, and my little bell...!"
  • "Oh, how I miss my little bell!"
  • "What? I don't need to play dead. I'm about to have a heart attack!"
  • "Fine."
  • "Oh, come on, it's the twitching that sells it."
  • "Jewel!"
  • "That was your plan?! To take off and leave me? Gee, thanks."
  • "Pull it together, the key is not to panic."
  • "I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to me."
  • "But it's okay, because any minute now, Linda will find us."
  • "Yes. I-I mean, no!"
  • "Not cool, man! Scary, but not cool!"
  • "Hey, are you okay?"
  • "Wait, what are you doing?!"
  • "Stop! Stop! Why don't you just, open the door?!"
  • "What? It's just a standard flip slide bolt. Just rotate-"
  • *muffled* "Oh, I can't..."
  • "I can't fly!"
  • "It didn't matter before now!"
  • "Yes, I can't fly, I pick my beak, and once in a while, I pee in the birdbath. Happy?"
  • "Wait, wait. Listen to me! Flying may not be my thing, but walking is."
  • "Follow my lead! Inside leg, outside leg!"
  • "Inside, outside, inside, outside!"
  • "See? I'm bilingual, too!"
  • "Actually, there are about forty different species of flightless birds!"
  • "No, ducks can fly."
  • "Hold on!"
  • "Ooh, what was that?"
  • "And that?"
  • "Oh. Right. Yeah."
  • "Ahh... Is that a spider on my back...?"
  • "You know when people say, 'It's a jungle out there'?"
  • "Well, I'm pretty sure they don't mean it as a good thing."
  • "Hey, don't talk to me about nature."
  • "I watch Animal Planet."
  • "I know all about the food chain."
  • "Ah, ah, you see, you see, out here, I'm just an hors d'oeuvres."
  • "Nothing more than a feathery spring roll."
  • "No, I don't think so."
  • "I would feel much more comfortable on something man-made."
  • "Hey, how about up there?"
  • "Drag me? Watch and learn."
  • "Who's dragging who's butt now, huh?"
  • "You see, who needs flying?"
  • "I don't know, sounds a little lonely."
  • "Well, I-I'm going to be up a little while."
  • "Y'know, since I'm still on Minnesota time."
  • "Goodnight, Jewel."
  • "Goodnight, Linda."
  • "Positive. Check out my math."
  • "Right. Then we can go and find Linda."
  • "Fine, deal."
  • "I think something is watching us."
  • "Aw, come here."
  • "Help."
  • "We're more like acquaintance-birds."
  • "Yeah. I mean, if-"
  • "AGH! What is it with this kid and the feathers?"
  • "Just how far is this Luiz?"
  • "And how long as the macaw walks?"
  • "Not all birds fly."
  • "There are ostriches..."
  • "Yeah, well, not technically, but..."
  • "I've changed my mind, yeah."
  • "Maybe we can find a bus schedule or something."
  • "Okay, yeah. Yeah, sure."
  • "Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's not like we're hurling ourselves off a mountain or something. Right?"
  • "What?"
  • "Yeah. Fun."
  • "What?"
  • "But this doesn't seem aerodynamically possible."
  • "Easy?"
  • "Easy for you to say."
  • "Because from here it looks really, really hard."
  • "Okay. You're right."
  • "This is for Linda."
  • "Keep it simple."
  • "Thrust, lift, drag..."
  • "Wait!"
  • "Inside, outside, inside, outside."
  • "I can do it. I can do it!"
  • "I can't do it!"
  • "Am I dead?"
  • "Wow! This is incredible."
  • "This is the most beautiful place I've ever seen!"
  • "Yes... I do feel it."
  • "Sorry, sorry, sorry!"
  • "We're gonna die!"
  • "Hey, last of the species here!"
  • "Hey! Wait up!"
  • "I would love to go five minutes without almost getting killed."
  • "Is that too much to ask?"
  • "No, no, it's not what you think. We're just chained together."
  • "What's wrong with this level?"
  • "This is the coolest place I've ever seen, y'know, despite all the obvious health code violations."
  • "What are you talking about, haven't you been listening?"
  • "That was meant for you."
  • "Thank you!"
  • "Man, we threw down!"
  • "Cheese and sprinkles!"
  • "It's a Minnesota thing."
  • "Don't worry. I got it."
  • "Is it hot?"
  • "I think I'm sweating."
  • "I didn't even think that was biologically possible, and yet, look!"
  • "Yeah."
  • "I have beautiful eyes."
  • "Right, yeah. Your eyes, your eyes are great, not mine."
  • "I mean, mine are okay."
  • "But yours, I bet you can see right through them."
  • "Jewel."
  • "I've been wanting to tell you that I..."
  • "After you."
  • "Please, I insist."
  • "Okay."
  • "Yeah. Quite an adventure."
  • "Yes."
  • "Tiny-soda? Wait, Minne-sota?" (mini-soda)
  • "That's very funny, actually."
  • "Inside, outside, inside, outside!"
  • "What?"
  • "Are you sure this is safe?"
  • "Gross."
  • "But I'm free!"
  • "Jewel! Jewel! We're free!"
  • "Slimy, but free!"
  • "Contaminated, probably, but free!"
  • "Can you believe it's finally... over."
  • "Nothing. Everything is perfect."
  • "You'll be off to the rainforest, I'll be back with Linda just like we planned."
  • "What, that you'd come to Minnesota? Great, I guess I'll knit you a scarf."
  • "Look, Jewel, I can't spend my life walking around following you wherever you're going."
  • "You want honesty? Fine, I can be honest!"
  • "I don't belong here... in fact, I never wanted to come here in the first place."
  • "And-and... and you know what? I hate samba!"
  • "Yeah, I said it... every song sounds exactly the same."
  • "Tiko-tako, ya ya ya! Tiko-tako, ya ya ya!"
  • "I'm tiko-tako out of here."
  • "Rafael, quit following me."
  • "You're going in the wrong direction."
  • "Isn't Carnival that way?"
  • "Stop! Just tell me what happened."
  • "This is all my fault... let's fly."
  • "Luiz, please!"
  • "Rescue first. Freak later."
  • "Linda! Linda? Wait."
  • "Let's go get Jewel."
  • "There they are! That's the float!"
  • "Hey, Jewel."
  • "I'm not gonna let you out of here."
  • "You really think I came alone?"
  • "I've got three of the roughest, meanest, craziest birds in all of Rio right behind me!"
  • "I'm gonna pop this cage open like a soda can."
  • "Hurry. We got to help the others."
  • "Go! Go! Go!"
  • "Wait, wait, wait!"
  • "Not cool, man. Not cool!"
  • "I'm not gonna let you go!"
  • "We're chained to each other birds, remember?"
  • "Wow! Yeah! I'm flying! I'm really flying."
  • "I'm not an ostrich! I'm not an ostrich!!! "

Rio 2

  • "Wait, me? Er... what's a song if you can't hear it too?"
  • "Oh, that wasn't a move, that was just an accident, but I accept the compliment."
  • "Looks like you're stuck with me all night."
  • "That's a good thing, since I'm the only other one."
  • "Rafi, where are the kids?"
  • "Uh... worries, right here."
  • "Luiz, where are the kids?"
  • "Our kids!"
  • "Tiny?!"
  • "Guys, what is this?"
  • "Guys, you know the rules."
  • "No pyrotechnics without adult supervision."
  • "That's even worse. Sorry, Tiny."
  • "Kids, next time, ask me."
  • "No I don't."
  • "Okay, honey, do I always say no?"
  • "Listen, we are the last blue Spix's macaws on the planet. We have to stay safe."
  • "Birds of blue feathers..."
  • "Oh, no no no no no no!"
  • "Well, this year's off to a great start."
  • "Okay! Who's ready for some breakfast?"
  • "And with the blueberries, it's four times as tasty!"
  • "Hey, where are the blueberries?"
  • "Bring it."
  • "It's down to the final minutes."
  • "He's got magic in his feet! He shoots, he scores!"
  • "Goal! Oh yeah! I got it! I'm good."
  • "Hey, honey, you hungry?"
  • "Oh, did we? So what you got there?"
  • "That's funny, but seriously, what is that?"
  • "Hey, it hasn't been that bad."
  • "We do?"
  • "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, we can't just pack up and go."
  • "Uh, I don't know, uh, maybe?"
  • "Hey, wait a second."
  • "It's okay, Luiz, good to see you too."
  • "Oh, no, no, I'm not here to audition. I have news. I am going to the Amazon. Yaaaay."
  • "Yeah, Jewel says it will be good for us."
  • "Wait, how wild?"
  • "Oh. Ok, well, great. I'm not going."
  • "It's not like it's forever, right?"
  • "See you in a couple of weeks!"
  • "Okay, bug spray, check, water purifier, check, band-aids... I feel like I'm forgetting something."
  • "Ah, ah, ah, that's not for you."
  • "Actually, Bia, those stories are highly exaggerated."
  • "Yeah, I need it for the GPS."
  • "Oh, wait, the GPS!"
  • "Check this out, the voice recognition makes it totally foolproof."
  • "Find Linda and Tulio."
  • "Actually, that doesn't sound like such a bad suggestion."
  • "Yes I do." *robotic voice*
  • "Wait, we didn't do a headcount!"
  • "Guys, wait up!"
  • "Great, thanks a lot, GPS lady."
  • "Slower! Slower! Waaah!"
  • "Here we are, kids - the gateway to the Amazon."
  • "Yeah, bye."
  • "I would do anything for you. You know that, right?"
  • "mumbles* You need a breath mint."
  • "Tiago Gunderson, listen to your mother."
  • "Guys, remember, birds of blue...whatever."
  • "See, it worked like a charm, here we are!"
  • "Oh, these things have a margin of error."
  • "You guys stay put, and I'll look around."
  • "Okay, guys..."
  • "Good one guys, very funny, good, great, very witty."
  • "Um, Jewel, where are you? Kids? Jewel?"
  • "Let me go!"
  • "Let me go you heathens!"
  • "I am an American citizen, you savage!"
  • "I demand to see my ambassador!"
  • "I know my rights! I know my rights!"
  • "Back, back, you barbarian!"
  • "Yeah, that's right! It's a spoon and a fork!"
  • "Be afraid! Be very afraid!"
  • "Okay, we're going to need some name tags, and..."
  • "Oh, those are breath mints."
  • "Not that you need them, but... they're good. You eat them."
  • "No, not the whole box!"
  • "Get that... out of... your... mouth!"
  • "Daddy?"
  • "Well, it sure is nice to meet you, sir."
  • "Kids, go easy on old Pop-Pop."
  • "Actually, I'm Blu."
  • "No, really, that's my name."
  • "Hi, hey, I am Jewel's significant other."
  • "Ju-ju?"
  • "That's adorable. I love doing the nicknames."
  • "You never mentioned any Roberto."
  • "Oh, well, actually..."
  • "Jewel? Jewel? Ow!"
  • "Yeah, we should get some rest. Find a local inn or B&B nearby."
  • "Thank you, but, we're fine. Besides, our whole family couldn't possibly fit in your bachelor pad."
  • "Woah. Real estate must be pretty cheap around here."
  • "I bet you did."
  • "Tiago, caref..."
  • "Yeah."
  • "Wait, what's changing? Jewel?"
  • "Honey, stop. That tickles."
  • "Tiago?!"
  • "Good morning, sir."
  • "Why did you let me sleep in?"
  • "Yeah but..."
  • "No, no, no, sweetheart, I just brushed my-"
  • "There, ready."
  • "Oh, this is a fanny pack."
  • "Woah, woah! Joining the tribe?"
  • "He doesn't actually think we're moving to the jungle, does he?"
  • "Alright, you win. I will leave the fanny pack behind... Happy wife, happy life."
  • Uh... yeah. Sure. Bye!"
  • "Oh, you are fast! You are really, really fast! I think I pulled a wing or something... You are fast for an old bird - er, wise bird..."
  • "Wise is what I meant to say which sometimes comes with age but you can be wise and young like you. It's a rare combination, but..."
  • "Really, it happens."
  • "Thank you, sir."
  • "I thought we were going sightseeing?"
  • "Of course he did."
  • "Wait, backwards? No, only hummingbirds can fly backwards."
  • "I'm up! I'm up! Nutty Brazil, Brazil nut trees."
  • "They seem nice."
  • "Maybe we should go find Linda..."
  • "Linda is the person who raised me."
  • "It wasn't like that. I was a companion."
  • "Linda is family."
  • "They're coming to help."
  • "You don't understand."
  • "I've found Linda and Tulio's coordinates. They're really close."
  • "I know your dad doesn't trust humans."
  • "It should get us there by morning."
  • "They may change his mind."
  • "They can help keep this place safe."
  • "I thought that was our plan?"
  • "She ate a bug! A BUG!"
  • "Calm down?! We had a plan!"
  • "Find the flock with Linda and Tulio then get home."
  • "But when I mentioned it to her, she completely shut me down."
  • "Oh, and her father? Mmmmm, total nut job!"
  • "He's got this weird thing about humans."
  • "He called me a PET!"
  • "I can't believe he said the "P" word to my face."
  • "It's like he thinks I'm the enemy or something."
  • "Oh, and that Roberto, he is always watching."
  • "He is always hovering around Jewel."
  • "He is always singing something."
  • "Oh, so I should eat a bug?"
  • "Sorry, sorry."
  • "How am I supposed to compete with that?"
  • "I know, happy wife, happy life."
  • "That's it!"
  • "I'll be the one to surprise her. Breakfast in bed, coming up!"
  • "Brazil nuts? Where are you?"
  • "I know you're around here somewhere."
  • "No, don't do it... ugh!"
  • "Gotcha!"
  • "Finally, Brazil nuts!"
  • "This is my most important tool."
  • "Sorry."
  • "No, this is just a misunderstanding..."
  • "Does it have to? Can it mean something else?"
  • "Pfft... The Pit of Doom?"
  • "Oh, really?"
  • "It was an accident!"
  • "I was just trying to get a nut! One nut!
  • "I was getting it for you!"
  • "You don't think I'm capable of doing it?"
  • "I have to stop this."
  • "Stop, STOP!"
  • "Eduardo, this is crazy."
  • "We're an intelligent species with advanced problem solving capabilities."
  • "Oh, it's a game! It's just a game!"
  • "Water. Get your water here..."
  • "Hah, I can do that."
  • "Really?"
  • "Yes! Yeah, here we go."
  • "Hey, pass it to me, I'm open! I'm wide open! Pass the ball to me!"
  • "I got this!"
  • "Nah! This bird's got this covered!"
  • "GOAL!!!... Oh."
  • "I was trying to be one of the tribe."
  • "But I guess I'm never gonna be 'the bird' like your dad wants me to be."
  • "How can this be home?"
  • "I have done everything I can to fit in and help out."
  • "But no matter what I do, it's wrong!"
  • "That's not home, Jewel. Maybe for you, but not for me."
  • "Goodbye, Linda."
  • "Goodbye GPS lady. It's not you, it's me."
  • "Goodbye, pancakes, goodbye, coffee. Ugh, ah, goodbye coffee."
  • "Linda? Linda?"
  • "What do you even know about humans?"
  • "Come on, Roberto."
  • "Roberto, get out of there."
  • "Snap out of it!"
  • "We got one chance to stop this."
  • "I have to find my friends!"
  • "You fly back and warn the others, got it?"
  • "You don't have to."
  • "Look, Eduardo, I might not be the birdliest bird in the flock, but for once, that's a good thing."
  • "You know the jungle, I know humans."
  • "I know that together we can stop them."
  • "We can't let them take our home."
  • "Sure, it's hot and loud and filled with creepy bugs, but it's ours."
  • "Let's fight for it!"
  • "Who's with me?"
  • "Uh, anybody else?"
  • "Wait. That's my name! Yes, Blu! You got it! Blu is my name! That's my name!"
  • "Yeah, I got it, I'm good."
  • "Birds of blue feathers..."
  • "Get them!"
  • "Under! Over! Backwards!"
  • "Good job, Tiago!"
  • "That's a Linda!"
  • "What are you doing?"
  • "Let go, save yourself!"
  • "Come on, let go!"
  • "Are you crazy?! You'll bring both of us down! Let go!"
  • "Nigel!"
  • "You don't have to do this!"
  • "You kidding me? I am Mr. Jungle."
  • "You're my one and only, Jewel."

Rio: Snakes Alive!

  • "Gotta go!"
  • "Listen up, everyone! Linda and Tulio are in trouble! They may lose the sanctuary!"
  • "I don't think they'd like the wild very much. Sure, they'd try. It's a nice place to visit for humans, but they wouldn't want to live there, no sir."
  • "We have to figure out a way to help Linda keep the sanctuary!"
  • "Let's hope it doesn't come to that. It's a jungle out there!"
  • "I guess it wouldn't be terrible, but we'd have to be careful! There are things like... terrible, raging waterfalls! What if we fell over one?!"
  • "No Bia, not awesome! I mean you have to watch out for like... quicksand!"
  • "No! Not fun! The animals out there can be fierce, like nothing you've ever seen!"
  • "Like I said kids, maybe... meanwhile, I've got a better idea for an adventure we can have right now!"
  • "Not only will it be fun, it will make us all very happy!"
  • "We'll help Tulio and Linda find the money to keep the sanctuary!"
  • "Money. Well... right. I know this one. Linda and I used to run a bookstore."
  • "And if someone wanted something, they'd have to hand over a little plastic card that Linda would swipe in a machine..."
  • "Or... sometimes they'd give us pieces of paper..."
  • "...or these little metal discs. Linda didn't like it if she got too many of those."
  • "But the point is, if you wanted to get something, you needed these things!"
  • "And that's money!"
  • "I have no idea."
  • "But Luiz might! He's lived in this city his whole life! He must have ideas about how to get money!"
  • "Yes-- but we'll have to be careful!"
  • "Stay together everyone! Who knows what we'll find on our way to the city?"
  • "Like a... SNAKE!!!"
  • "Forest Racer. Frogs. I knew that."
  • "Luiz!"
  • "Uh... easy, big guy."
  • "But you don't get paid for chasing things."
  • "Huh- maybe if Linda had something that could grow hair, she could sell it to that one guy for a million bucks!"
  • "Well... uh... if that's the best you've got, I guess it's worth a shot."
  • "An elixir that can restore hair on people, feathers on birds? Can it be real?"
  • "Thanks for agreeing to babysit, guys!"
  • "Sorry kids, it's safer here! Last of the species and all that!"
  • *thinking* "And Luiz did say there was a monster guardian..."
  • "Once we're past the fence, we'll take the safest possible path!"
  • "Yeah, I know it's a long-shot, but nothing's more important than saving the sanctuary and keeping us all together."
  • "I really love it when you agree with me."
  • "Luiz wasn't kidding when he said you can't miss it!"
  • "Uphill too! Not that it matters when you're flying, I guess..."
  • "We can do this, Jewel. No matter how hard, no matter what danger lurks ahead!"
  • "Hey, things that eat birds are natural too! And something could happen like... I dunno..."
  • "THAT! LOOK OUT!!!"
  • "I knew that..."
  • "Whew, getting close now! Let's take a breather."
  • "AHHHH!"
  • "Oh gosh! Sorry big guy."
  • "It's just that you kind of snuck up on me! I'm not usually so jumpy, but I've been under some stress lately..."
  • "See my friend Linda..."
  • "His family is coming. I'm sure they'll help him find his stick!"
  • *whispering* "Let's go!"
  • "Or at least part of it."
  • "Part of it? Looks like all of it's true! That must be the elixir!"
  • "Hold it... does that mean the part about the monster guardian is true, too? *Ulp*!"
  • "Once we bring Linda and Tulio here, they can sell this stuff and they'll have all the money they need to save the sanctuary!"
  • "There's not much left."
  • "The big problem, is how do we get Linda and Tulio in here? They'll never fit!"
  • "Wait! What about the guardian?"
  • "You're probably right."
  • "Besides, humans wouldn't build something they couldn't get out of! This should be easy."
  • *Ulp*! "But maybe... explore with caution!"
  • "Probably just a big old Forest Racer, right? Nothing to worry about?"
  • "Heh. Silly of me."
  • "I know it's not a real, just a picture, but my heart's hammering so fast, it sounds like a flock of birds."
  • "BATS!"
  • "Really? Jeffrey's that important to you?"
  • "Family? Boy, they take their sticks seriously!"
  • "Jewel!"
  • "Look out!"
  • "Jewel, I must be delirious. I think I hear the kids!"
  • "Good. At least we heard them one last time before resigning ourselves to being trapped forever!"
  • "You guys mean the world to me, and I just want to say..."
  • "What are you doing here? You should be home!!!"
  • "An exit? There's a way out?"
  • "Curly... got it! Now what?"
  • *Ungh*! "Just, she says!"
  • "Did it!"
  • "Ha! When a family pulls together, all sorts of doors open up! Doors to happiness! Doors to freedom!"
  • "Doors to... uh... *Ulp*!"
  • "Sure, Bia... but if you don't mind, grab your brother and sister and..."
  • "I s-s-s-symphatize! S-s-s-sometimes I s-s-s-stutter when I'm s-s-s-scared!"
  • "Please tell me you're an unusually large Forest Racer that only f-f-feeds on f-f-frogs."
  • "No, huh?"
  • "Jewel, get the kids out of here!"
  • "I don't care how big he is, I won't let him hurt my family!"
  • "Yeowww!"
  • "Coming through!"
  • "I'm fine... and we're safe! That big snake is never getting through that tiny crack!"
  • "EEEP!"
  • "Stay quiet!"
  • "He's so big and fast I don't want to risk trying to get high enough before he can snatch us!"
  • "But he'll never see us here!"
  • "Please, take me! Let them go! They're my family! Y-you understand about family, don't you?"
  • "I love you, too."
  • "They can't hold him off for long. He'll be back for us!"
  • "I've got to stop him!"
  • "I love my family too much to give up without a fight!"
  • "I did. But this time, I thought I'd try the back of your head."
  • "Stay back! On second thought... HELP!"
  • "N-n-n-no p-p-p-problem! Th-th-thanks!"
  • "Don't worry, I'm too afraid to let go!"
  • "Gangway! I don't know how to steer this thing!"
  • "Big snake coming through!"
  • "I can't! My claw is stuck in his scales!"
  • "Sorry! This incredibly gigantic Anaconda had other ideas!"
  • *thinking* "Ah, Linda, you always know exactly what I'm thinking!"
  • *thinking* "Yes! And when you see it, all your problems will be solved!"
  • "Poppa!"
  • "Oh no! No! The elixir is gone!"
  • "All that and we'll still lose the sanctuary! This is terrible!"
  • "We all did!"
  • "Seriously, your mother and I would still be stuck in that cave-in if you hadn't run from your baby-sitters! I don't know whether to be mad at them for letting you get out, or thank them!"
  • "Hey, whatever happened to those guys?"

Rio: The Junior Novel

  • Uhhh, this guy is freaking me out over here!
  • "Jewel did that?!"
  • "Okay, look!"
  • "We got off to a-bad start-but if you let me live-maybe you'll-get to like me...
  • "Don't you know?"
  • "I am the last Spix's Macaw on earth!"
  • "That's why I'm meet you. We're the only ones left.
  • "It pays to be bilingual."
  • "I bet you didn't know how to speak dog."
  • "What? Are you kidding? No Way!"
  • "Thank You!"
  • "Sticky! But free!"
  • "Contaminated with germs but free!"

Rio 2: The Junior Novel

  • "Oh well..."
  • "Really, that's my name."
  • "New Year's, maybe?"
  • "Just putting it out there."
  • "Yeah but-"
  • "What does she mean, she didn't know?"
  • "I don't even belong here."
  • "I can't lose her!"
  • "Yeah, you heard her stop it!"
  • "What's to know?"
  • "That was our plan all along."
  • "Where are those things?"
  • "Come on corrupted... by a fanny pack."
  • "Yeah, Rude, violent, borderline psychotic."
  • "I think it's time we headed home."
  • "What are you saying?"
  • "What? We already have a great home in Rio."
  • "I've been trying so hard, Jewel."
  • "But I don't belong in the jungle."
  • "I can't do this anymore."
  • "Roberto! Enough with this guy!"
  • "Oh, and P.S., your father hates me."
  • "Trust me, your family would be very happy if I left!"
  • "Your dad doesn't even know who I am!"
  • "Stu, Drew, Lou, or Sue."
  • "I'll never be "the bird" like Roberto."
  • "Oh, I miss this."
  • "What are you talking about?"
  • "Your the one who's Mr. Perfect."
  • "Perfect voice, perfect dance moves, perfect wingspan."
  • "Think of something."
  • "Where's Jewel?"
  • "The kids."
  • "Sorry-do I know you?"
  • "But spend summers and the occasional weekend back in Rio."
  • "Even if I'm not the only other one."
  • "I'm not sure I believe you."
  • "You should probably come closer."
  • "Closer."
  • "I am going to kiss you now."
  • "To help them find this place."

Rio: Match 3 Party

  • "Let me guess... You're a samba sort of person, right?"
  • "Are you ready to dance the night away?"
  • "Oh! Sorry. I had my head in the clouds."
  • "Let me give you a birds-eye view of my party plan."
  • "Oof! That is a heavy hand you have there."
  • "Put on your dancing shoes!"
  • "Hey, I was just about to take a little nap over here."
  • "I swear I left that carrot over... Oh! Hi!"
  • "Hey! Hi. Hello. Gotta go!"
  • "Jewel is going to love this!"
  • "Let's turn these preparations into a game!"
  • "Grab your dance shoes! I'll explain later."
  • "Sorry! Do I have something in my feathers?"
  • "Say no more! We're ready to party!"
  • "Hmm? Oh! Sorry. My mind was wandering..."
  • "Ooh hoo!"
  • "That's a pretty swell outfit you're wearing!"
  • "Lend me a helping wing? Uh, oh... a helping hand."
  • "Ooo! Sorry! I didn't see you there."
  • "With your help, this will be the best party ever!"
  • "You know, some people say I"m quite the party animal."
  • "You're really going to need your wits to plan this one!"
  • "Remember: roll up your sleeves! Humans do that, right?"
  • "Behold! The Partier of the Year is here!"
  • "I always have time for you, friend."
  • "You should ask Jewel to help decorate your outfit."
  • "I need your help over here!"
  • "It's time to roll up your sleeves!"
  • "We still have a lot of planning to do!"
  • "You have my undivided attention."
  • "Who? Me?"
  • "Time for you to teach us a master class in party prep!"
  • "Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty!"
  • "So, what's the plan? You do have a plan, right?"
  • "Could you just scratch a little lower, please?"
  • "I have a pretty creative idea for you, buddy."

  • "You can invite your friends to the party!"
  • "I am all ears, friend!"
  • "We deserve a party, don't you think?"
  • "Hi! I'm glad you made it."
  • "Oh! Hi there! You scared me."
  • "Remember: roll up your sleeves. Humans do that, right?"
